By Jean Lanfear, VP Human Resources of Patton Wings, Inc., a franchisee of Buffalo Wild Wings. With the turning of the calendar comes a natural inclination to assess the path we’re on and consider the future that lies ahead. With a full month behind us in 2024, the turning of the calendar reminds us that our lives are dynamic, and oftentimes, we’re ready for exploration. For those whose year holds the possibility of beginning or reinventing your career path, perhaps 2024 is your year for a new set of skills. As the head of human resources for Patton Wings, Inc., a franchisee of Buffalo Wild Wings, I’m grateful to have a front row seat to the hiring and career opportunities side of Michigan’s hospitality industry. I can confidently say that the opportunities don’t end at the too-often-thought-of as part-time or entry-level-only role that most know. Nearly half a million Michiganders work in the $45 billion hospitality industry – one of the 10 fastest growing employment sectors in the state. Job opportunities in this industry are available in every community, year-round. It’s an industry that’s easy to step into no matter what level you’re at in your career, and traditionally, offers years of on-the-job, hands-on training opportunities. New this year, and for the first time, those looking for a career in the hospitality industry have a chance to gain the skills needed to increase their earning potential and expand their career opportunities in a quick and comprehensive way. Thanks to the Hospitality Training Institute of Michigan, up to 2,000 Michiganders can now take a 12-week program for free, designed with their futures in mind. At the end, graduates walk away with nationally recognized certifications, including ServSafe Manager certifications, and more. And as an added bonus, students who successfully complete all certifications of the 12-week course will receive $500.
Program graduates have walked away ready to accelerate their career, with diverse and advanced skillsets that are critical to the long-term success of any business, and in turn, their futures. Working in hospitality is not just about providing important services, but it’s also about creating experiences and leaving a mark on people’s lives. Success in the industry requires a passion for people, a spirit of hospitality, and a solid understanding of business operations. It’s a career that employees can feel genuinely good about – something that many may be looking for as they start the new year strong. Also, if you’re looking for a way to step up into the next chapter of your career, but concerned about the time it will take away from your current employer, no need to fret. HTIM designed this course to allow for employer participation, so if your employer is involved in your course progress, you can work together to ensure appropriate time off for course completion. That’s because employers know that when employees gain business and leadership skills, they can contribute more to an employer’s business. And when employers invest in training for their employees, it shows a commitment to their growth that earns employee loyalty and commitment —which improves retention. It’s what many would call a ‘win-win’ situation all around. The hospitality industry offers a dynamic, lifelong, and rewarding career path with leadership and professional growth opportunities. It’s also one where your career growth is limited only by your level of knowledge. To any Michigander considering their future in 2024, I strongly recommend signing up for the HTIM program at htim.com/stepup to see where your career can take you.
