Meet Matthew Vogel.Location: Marquette, MI
Employer: Patton Wings, Inc. DBA JK&T Wings Franchisee of Buffalo Wild Wings Title: General Manager Why did you want be an instructor for the HTIM business management course? I wanted to engage with other members of my community that work in the same industry as me and develop relationships throughout different hospitality concepts in my region. I have taught classes in the past, so this was a new and exciting challenge for me. This course has not only taught new things to others, but it has also allowed me to broaden my knowledge and become a more well-rounded manager. How will this course help individuals step up in their career? This course encompasses all aspects of the hospitality industry. Everything from food safety, alcohol safety, human resources, to menu pricing and hotel operations. This course allows participants to engage with fellow service professionals in their area, and to enhance their knowledge of managing their own operations as well. What advice do you have for others in the hospitality industry who are looking for ways to grow in their career? To always learn as much as you can when the opportunity arises, and to deepen your connections with members of your community. The hospitality industry is always changing and is always looking for talent from within. Continue to grow and expand your knowledge of all aspects of operations and you can take your talents with you anywhere you go! What is your favorite part of teaching the HTIM business management course? My favorite part so far has been the community connections I have been making, and the knowledge that I have gained from the members of my class. I enjoy learning new ideas and learning how different operations function within my own community. These connections and valuable lessons have allowed me to grow as a professional and broaden my own knowledge as an instructor. How long have you been working in the industry? I have been working in the industry since I was a child. My parents owned a small corner bar in Wisconsin growing up, so I was always helping with Friday Fish Fry orders, making tartar sauce, and running to the coolers for pickles. This transitioned into me working at a banquet hall when I was 16 until I moved away for college. Fast forward a few years, I started working at Buffalo Wild Wings (BWW) in 2010 and have been here ever since! Can you share more background on your current role? I started with BWW in September of 2010 and was originally hired in as a cashier. I worked here throughout college, and eventually cross-trained to be a server, bartender, and eventually a trainer for both serving and bartending. I continued to work here after I graduated from NMU and was offered a management position in 2014. I worked as a manager for one year, and then in June of 2015 I was promoted to general manager at 23 years old. I've been in my role ever since and have helped other stores in my region. I have also assisted with opening a new concept called Corktown Pizza Company in Petoskey, MI. I'm still based out of Marquette and work at my home store location, but I assist with operations in my Northern Michigan region. The region consists of five BWW stores and one Corktown Pizza store. Interesting and fun fact: When I’m not at work, I love to go biking, hiking, and taking my dogs for a walk. I love being outdoors and enjoy exploring all of the wonderful sites that the U.P. has to offer! |
