As an employer, what benefits do you see for your employees completing the HTIM business management course? 
We appreciate the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association’s investment in the HTIM Business Management Course. Since the pandemic, finding dedicated time to mentor team members is a challenge. We are grateful for the support this program is offering to work with our young management members.

Can you share more about your business?
Schuler’s Restaurant and Pub has been a family-owned business since its opening in 1909. At one time, the Schuler family owned nine restaurants in Michigan and one in Fort Wayne. In 2019, Hans Schuler (third generation) transitioned the business to Sue Damron who had worked in the company since 1989.

Sue has expanded the restaurant brand by renovating the second and third floor of the historic restaurant building. Where there once were 36 hotel rooms (the original hotel closed in the 1970’s), there are now seven apartments and five hotel rooms — The Royal Apartments and Hotel. Construction is beginning this spring on another addition to the Schuler brand. Sue and her team are beginning renovations on a 250-person event center just 1.5 blocks from the restaurant’s front door. Playing upon the year the Schuler Restaurant company opened for business, they’ve named the center 19Zero9 Venue. There will be three additional hotel rooms in this building in Historic Downtown Marshall. Schuler’s Restaurant and Pub is a 550-seat restaurant known for prime rib, Swiss onion soup, BBQ meatballs and its heritage cheese spread.  

Have you sent employees to the HTIM course? If so, how many? 
We have one individual this first quarter. And we have two others registered and two others who are considering registering.

How does your business benefit from employees completing the course?
Our staff attending will graduate from the course with three certifications as well as a wealth of knowledge to assist them in their roles daily. Dealing with a difficult customer, surprise hospitality, understanding budgets and financials.

What advice do you have for others in the hospitality industry who are looking for ways to step up in their career? 
HTIM is offering a great opportunity for you to put something on your resume.  As you look for opportunities for growth in the hospitality industry, showing your willingness to invest in yourself is a great first step.

What advice do you have for other hospitality businesses who want to help employees improve their skills?
HTIM is providing the opportunity for the mentoring you have done with your management trainee to be reinforced and enhanced by hearing from an outside trainer.  

Is there anything else you’d like to share? 
HTIM is offering a $500 bonus for anyone completing the course. We are covering the time that our staff spend in class and anyone completing the class is eligible for a $1,000 salary bump. We want to support the importance of completing the class and putting in the work to earn the reward.
