How will this help you step up in your career?
The HTIM course gave me the tools I needed to reevaluate our hospitality department as a whole and inspired me to strengthen our organization using tools I learned in class. It has also inspired me to pursue some of my other future endeavors like getting my CMP. What advice do you have for others in the hospitality industry who are looking for ways to grow their career? Never stop trying to grow or be inspired. When you invest in yourself it creates a ripple effect in your work and inspires those around you, enhancing the overall guest experience. Take advantage of all learning and networking opportunities. Lead by example, kindness, and be passionate about the work you do. Opportunities will present themselves when you let your unique personality shine. What was your favorite part of the HTIM business management course? I loved getting to connect with others who had similar goals to me in the industry. It was insightful, inspiring, and overall, a wonderful opportunity to grow as professionals. How long have you been working in the industry? I became a wedding planner in 2014 through Ashworth College. I was in healthcare prior to this and always enjoyed helping others. When I discovered I could still help people through hospitality but in a different way, I fell in love with the industry. I have tried to make every moment and milestone special for others, from serving a cup of coffee to coordinating weddings. Can you share more background on your current role? As the Hospitality Manager at Woldumar Nature Center I love my job getting to connect with people and nature. Our nonprofit’s mission is to educate people about the natural environment. In my position I essentially fundraise for the organization by booking weddings and events. I work directly with clients when it comes to planning their wedding or other special milestone event, as well as meetings and conferences. I also oversee our facilities and do marketing and social media. What was your first job in hospitality? How did you get into this industry? My first hospitality role was in food service when I was 16 years old. I then quickly moved into the healthcare field for about two years. During that time, I became deeply passionate about event planning and inspired to become a wedding planner. I took a wedding planning course and then began searching for jobs. I landed a great job at Woldumar Nature Center as a set up crew member, but quickly took over the weddings and events. Since then, I have had many wonderful experiences and roles at a few other venues and full service hotels. I love being able to connect with the community through creating wonderful experiences. Interesting and fun fact: I love creating beautiful things! I enjoy baking and cooking, decorating, crafting, and throwing beautiful celebrations for fun. Final thoughts: If you are considering doing this program, absolutely do it! I loved each week of HTIM and wished it were longer. I will always cherish my experience and the connections made.
