Opinion: Strengthening Michigan's hospitality industry starts with stepping up

​When you visit your favorite neighborhood pub or stay at a resort on your bucket list, there are hardworking Michiganders working behind the scenes to ensure that you leave with positive memories. 

I’ve worked in Michigan’s hospitality industry for 16 years in roles from dishwasher to wedding planner. As the general manager of the Mammoth Distilling Traverse City Tasting Room, I get to support my staff and make crucial business decisions, and execute unique experiences where customers can come in and create their own blend of whiskey to take home. ​

However, what I love about my career is not just my current leadership position, but my journey to getting here and the opportunities available in Michigan to grow in hospitality.
 
I completed the Hospitality Training Institute of Michigan (HTIM) Hospitality Business Management Course in June of this year and gained nationally recognized certifications and developed new leadership skills that I immediately took back to my team. HTIM’s course is still being offered at no cost to residents around the state, and it’s a one-of-a-kind opportunity to put yourself in a position to step up in the hospitality industry...
